Agoraphobic Nosebleed – Is This Really A Symptom

Epistaxis or nosebleed is a symptom that is often associated with many conditions, diseases and disorders.Although quite rare, agoraphobic nosebleed or epistaxis related to agoraphobia does happen to a few people who have been diagnosed with agoraphobia or other anxiety disorders.

{Agoraphobia: What Is It}?

Phobias are defined as unrelenting irrational fear of a situation, an object, a person, leading to avoidance behavior. Agoraphobia, as a type of phobia, is a condition of unrelenting and irrational fear of a situation where escape could be impossible or humiliating. People with agoraphobia experience an intense wave of fear when in an environment where they think escape would be hard for them or would be embarrassing.

Agoraphobia is frequently compounded with the fear of being embarrassed in public, as a result of the onset of panic attack. When this is a symptom, the condition is called social agoraphobia or social anxiety or social phobia. Not all forms of agoraphobia is by nature social, though. There are certain forms of agoraphobia that are directly related to only one place or situation where usually a previous attack occurred. Other types of this phobia can be linked to the presence of post traumatic stress disorder as well as obsessive compulsive disorder, both are major forms of anxiety disorders. Most forms of irrational fear that prevent a person from going out, in fact, may be classified as agoraphobia.

Previously known as the fear of being in public places, agoraphobia is now considered the fear of not being able to escape from certain situations, not just social situations. Two related conditions which are usually confused with agoraphobia are claustrophobia (fear of being closed in and having no escape) and social phobia (fear of being in public situation).

{Causes of Agoraphobia}

There are no known cause to agoraphobia although some theories exist to provide plausible explanations. First, clinicians and researchers propose that agoraphobia is linked to any of the following: presence of a related condition such as anxiety disorders, substance abuse, stressful environments. Use and dependence on tranquilizers and sleeping pills have also been suggested to cause this condition as well as problems with spatial orientation. Research suggests that agoraphobics have weak or imbalanced spatial orientation. They tend to be overwhelmed and disoriented depending on whether visual cues are overwhelming or are lacking.

Although agoraphobia, like all other anxiety disorders, can be related to a number of different factors, it is also known to run in families.

{Signs and Symptoms of Agoraphobia}

The main symptom of agoraphobia is the anxiety that a patient will experience a panic attack when in a situation or place where escape could be difficult or embarrassing. On top of this, other symptoms include increased level of anxiety, nausea, rapid heartbeat, dizziness, trembling and disorientation.

Although very uncommon, some agoraphobics do experience nose bleeding that is associated with agoraphobia or agoraphobic nosebleed. The main symptom being the blood formation in the nose as a result or prior to an attack. This is not among the major symptoms of agoraphobia and is thus rarely mentioned in medical books.
