Lanzarote – What To Expect From A Holiday There

isLanzarote is a lovely piece of the Canary Islands, the chain’s fourth largest constituent and easternmost point. This Spanish territory formed in the Atlantic Ocean around 35 million years ago as volcanoes breathed fiery life to new land. Lanzarote is home to only two industries; agriculture and tourism. The latter has kept the island alive for over 40 years, so what makes Lanzarote popular with tourists?

Much of the appeal has to do with the wonderful sights to absorb on the island. One such sight is a testament to Lanzarote’s volcanic past known as the Cueva de los Verdes. 3,000 years ago, a volcano erupted, creating a lava stream that flowed over the land. As the flow hardened and sections collapsed, a tube formed a sort of cave from the volcanic rock. Adding to the already natural beauty of the cave are sections containing seawater that has found its way inside. Nestled inside the colorful rock walls is even a concert hall capable of holding about 500 people.

Arrecife is Lanzarote’s capital city and one of the major attractions on the island. Meaning “reef” in Spanish, Arrecife derives its name from the rocky barrier that sits out from the sparkling beach at the edge of town. The reef is an interesting backdrop to the sunbathing and swimming activities that tourists enjoy while visiting. A trip to the harbor brings guests to the Gran Hotel Arrecife, the highest structure in all of the Canary Islands. Local churches constructed from the region’s historic and cultural architecture are a lovely sight, and a journey to the Castle of San Gabriel provides an even greater sense of antiquity. The wondrous and slightly imposing shipwreck off of Arrecife’s coast inspires awe in those who gaze upon its hull.

Timanfaya National Park is located in the southwestern section of Lanzarote. The park’s active volcano, appropriately name Timanfaya, provided the beautiful park with its name, and the steam geyser that climbs high into the air as a result of the hot ground entertains guests who venture to the park. Dazzling mountain vistas are worthy of more than a few good photographs as are the local plants and animals. Photographs will likely be the extent of your interaction with them, however, because Timanfaya National Park has been designated a biosphere reserve by UNESCO. Visitors are closely regulated, which can add a privileged air to a trip to the park.

Tourists love Lanzarote thanks largely to the scenic vistas the island offers. For more than four decades, it has been the chosen vacation destination for a number of people that only continues to grow year after year.
