Nowadays, the dollar and euro are not performing well in the money market. Gold is a type all on its own and currencies would be changing to it rather than it changing to them. Compared to other investment opportunities like stocks and bonds, gold is in a class of its own. Gold is an asset that people can hold on to even when in really bad times.
