Basic Steps for Book Repair

In our age of electronic media, books have increasingly been treated with disrespect. This is unfortunate. First, it is not good because printed matter may represent the only way some material is preserved for the future. This might be true of out-of-print books, old diaries, letters, or legal documents. Second, books are very portable and can be read in spare moments. You can pull out a book and read any time without batteries or reduced light.

Books have changed the course of history. Books have brought great good, like the age of enlightenment and the end of slavery, and great evil such as communist oppression or Hitler’s rise. A book is a condensation of another’s thoughts, an opportunity to listen to an expert at your leisure. Classics should be treated with respect and preserved.

However, though its truths may be timeless, the materials will age. This is the reason why book treasures need to be repaired from time to time. To understand this, we need to discuss the vocabulary of books. Since we can’t post pictures, get a volume in hand to visualize each part.

The majority of a book is the text block or book block. It is made up of parts called the pages, the leaves, the sheets, and the signatures. A leaf is made up of one piece of paper folded in half. This makes four pages. A sheet is each half, containing two pages. Several leafs combined in one unit is a signature.

Most large books are made up of several signatures. The signatures are then glued together or to the headband, a piece of cloth that can be seen on the hinge edge. This holds the signatures together as one block.

The bottom of a book is called the tail, the top is called the head. Inside the cover one piece of paper is glued to both the cover and the block. It is called the pastedown on the cover side. It is called the end sheet on the block side.

The most common book damage is in one of three ways. The first problem is when the pastedown tears away from the cover. This makes the cover flop. You need polyvinyl acetate adhesive (not white glue) to work onto the ripped surface with an object like a knitting needle. The book must be clamped or pressed until the glue is dry.

A second damage is one or more loose signatures. If this is a minor problem, it can also be carefully glued with the same adhesive and pressed until dry.

The third common type of repair is called tipping-in. This results when one or more single sheets come out of a book. The technique involves making sure the glue is only applied to the edge of the loose sheet and that it is inserted and clamped to dry straight.

Home done book repair can be successful or it can cause serious damage to the book. If the wear to the volume is serious or if you want to be sure it is repaired professionally, it would be good to entrust your precious book to an expert.
