Hoarders And How To Help The One You Love
Hoarding is a mental disorder that is often misunderstood. While there are countless households effected by this disease each year, the exact number is still anyone’s guess. Given the misconceptions still faced by those who hoard many are reluctant to step forward to seek out help and will instead continue collecting what they believe to be items of value. In reality, they are placing themselves and their families in danger. But what exactly is hoarding and how can you offer the help that is so desperately needed?
Compulsive hoarding is the act of collecting obsessively. Unlike the more traditional notion of collecting such as with baseball cards or Star Wars figures, hoarders will collect anything and everything that may have even the slightest use in the future. Should they happen to find a graco snugride infant car seat they will probably keep it even if there is no immediate need for it. While a hoarder’s first intention might be to keep the seat until needed they will most likely not give it up even if it is actually needed. This is because they have placed an emotional attachment to the item and can no longer bear to part with it. This results in piles of unused stuff.
Hoarding is not a choice. This is important to understand before proceeding any further. Those who hoard are not doing so because they are dirty. They do not want seven dyson vacuum dc17 but they are compelled by forces that they do not understand to keep them. Many extreme cases will not even remember that they own a vacuum cleaner let alone that they own multiples. The dangers of this behavior are numerous with the worse cases being potentially life threatening. Hoarders often let their stuff accumulate in any space in the house including walk ways, living rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms. They will stack piles of stuff to the ceiling and let it gather in the open spaces until there is only a narrow path available. There are several deaths each and every year as a result of people being crushed or suffocated under their own hoarding stash.
Other dangers of hoarding involve issues of sanitation. Many people who have this ailment will keep it a secret for years and even decades. As a result severe structural damage may have occurred to their home or apartment. These damages may not have been inflicted by the actual stuff but because the person is far too ashamed to allow anyone into their home to do any repairs. So a small leak under the sink may soon become a larger issue involving rotted cabinets, mold, and rust. Critters such as rats and roaches can then come into the home not attracted initially by the hoard but since they were provided such an easy way in. They will stay in the piles of stuff and junk however. Biological contamination is also possible especially for those who store food. Expired products, rotten fruits and vegetables, and containers full of leaky meat can present significant dangers to the health and well being of the household.
There is no definite cure for hoarding just treatment and education about the behavior. No one can even really explain why people are obsessed with keeping old newspapers or mens wedding bands just that they do and that the behavior now present a very real danger to their health and happiness. Due to the shame and fear involved many do not seek the help that they need and will even begin to alienate themselves from friends and families out of that fear. Should you find that a loved one suffers from this affliction you need to approach it with understanding and with professional help.
What you do not want to do is to take extreme action. While throwing everything away may seem to be the best and most logical solution to you this will in fact prove to be devastating to the person who suffers from hoarding. In fact, such an action may cause the person to become worse. There are specialist available that can give the hoarder the help and understanding that he or she needs. It is crucial to seek out this type of help.
This disease is far more dangerous then many people think. These people are not just pack rats. They do not like living in such a manner. Many feel that hoarding is the symptom of other mental problems and should be approached with understanding and compassion. While you may feel frustrated and frightened by their behavior especially if they are a loved one, just remember that they can not help what they do. Offer whatever help you can just remember that they may not even understand why they have such a compulsion and need your support.
