Sinking Kangaroo Saved By Ozzy Surfer
A selfless Australian man has saved a kangaroo from the crashing waves on a beach on the Gold Coast.
Local surfer and extreme sports enthusiast Neil McCallum spotted an object out to sea that he had never seen before. It didn’t seem to be making any progress and would occasionally be covered by a wave. As he shielded his eyes to get a better look he saw that it was in fact an infant kangaroo that had bizarrely found its way quite a distance out to sea. Neil thought quickly and grabbing one of larger surfboards he headed out to see if he could help the poor creature.
The kangaroo didn’t have much energy left by the time he got to it. The strong currents and high waves had been sapping its energy for a while. Niel did make an attempt to hoist the animal up onto his surfboard, but the kangaroo wasn’t very happy with this and jumped back into the sea. A number of people paddling kayaks were also in the area but not close enough to help. Neil decided to take another approach and got the kangaroo under one arm and paddled back into shore with the other. Although a little worse for ware, both Neil and the roo made it back onto solid ground.
Why the little kangaroo decided to head out to sea has yet to be explained by animal experts, however they have given him the name Ian, as a humorous tribute to swimming gold medalist Ian Thorpe. “Kangaroos really can’t swim very well” says Bret Harding of the Queensland Nature Reserve. They very rarely even enter water above their knees he states, but maybe this one had never been taught that by its parents.
Ian has been looked after at a local kangaroo sanctuary and his back to full fitness. He will be released soon but along way from the coast where he can’t get himself into any more trouble. As for Neil, he remains modest about the whole thing and says that he was just helping out another of God’s creatures.
