Giant Earrings: A Celebrity Fashion We’ll Look Back On and Cringe
Enormous earrings are the a la mode accessory of 2009. Most recently we’ve seen the likes of Kate Winslet at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, Kate Beckinsale at the Globes and Michelle Obama at the inauguration, adorned with glittering long earrings that fall below their jaws.
Now doctors have decided to speak out about this growing trend, warning that they can cause permanent damage to your earlobes. There has been a worrying rise in the number of people needing severe cosmetic surgery to fix torn and damaged earlobes. Apparently the ear lobe tissue is very delicate and can’t handle seven pounds of metal and jewels dangling off them!No kidding!
Although this story has been picked up by a lot of newspapers I highly doubt it will change things in the fashion industry. The risk of needing cosmetic surgery on a damaged ear is unlikely to put off the fashion icons and trendsetters. High flying celebrities all have their own personal cosmetic surgeons anyway. And it’s not like they are going to struggle with the surgery bill on this one. They will still show up on TV and in glossy magazines with supersized designer 7-inch drop chandeliers with saltwater pearls. And, as long as they do, young girls will keep following the fashion and buy cut price and exaggerated versions in high street jewelers.Frankly the notoriety from all this press is probably going to make them even more popular with young girls looking to make that rebellious fashion statement.
Even more damaging is the increasing trend amongst rebel youth to get into “lobe stretching”. As the name implies, it involves actually setting out to stretch and distort your earlobes by squeezing bigger and bigger plugs and gauges into your piercing. What you end up with is an enormous ring of loose flesh hanging off your ear. Hey, if that’s what floats your boat who am I to question it. But what if you change your mind ten years down the line? You end up with permanent harm done to your ears, and most people won’t have the means to get them “fixed”!
In years to come this particular trend is going to be the cause of much embarrassment when we look at the pictures.Might we one day be cringing with embarassment at all the deformed earlobes and wondering why we ever went there? Will giant earrings be one day be consigned to the dustbin of fashion history, along with massive Kate Moss style bug eye sunglasses? Personally I’d rather look back and laugh at it MINUS the permanent scarring, thank you very much. I think I’ll stick to my penchant for modest pearl jewellery and grow old gracefully.
